Butterfly Viewing Destination

The Town of Clinton is about to become a Butterfly Viewing Destination, with the help of the

Country Garden Club

Butterfly Gardens are planned for the Red Mill Museum Village, Hunterdon Art Museum and the North Branch of the Hunterdon County Library.

Members of Clinton’s Green Team, the newly formed Clinton Conservancy, merchants and local garden clubs are working on a plan and would like you to join us.

With your help we can expand the gardens to include the entire town of Clinton. We would like you to plant your planters and gardens with “Chocolate Cake” designated flowers. Butterflies like all flowers but they LOVE the “Chocolate Cake” variety, a designation given by Jane Ruffin of the NJ Audubon Society. They are top nectar producing flowers and very attractive to butterflies. To see the entire list go to the NJ Audubon Society website and look for “Recommended Plantings to Attract Hummingbirds, Butterflies & Moths”.
Following is a list of “Chocolate Cake” annual flowers.

The Audubon website includes perennials, vines, shrubs, trees, herbs and grasses.

“Chocolate Cake” annuals for Butterfly Gardens include:
Lantana, “Profusion” Zinnias, Globe Amaranth, Egyptian Star Clusters*, Fuchsia, Heliotrope, Pineapple Sage, Cardinal Flower, Autumn Sage, Mexican Sunflower, Tropical Milkweed, and Common Milkweed.

* Not designated “Chocolate Cake” but a known butterfly and hummingbird attractant.
